What and how to recycle Garbage rates for Vacaville Greenwaste facts Dealing with household hazardous waste Reuse, resell and repair used items Answers to frequently asked questions Safe disposal of electronic waste

Vacaville residents can turn yard waste into valuable compost and mulches by putting materials in your green toter and setting them at the curb. Acceptable materials include leaves, trimmings, grass and even kitchen vegetable waste. Sticks and branches must be cut small enough to fit inside the container with the lid closed.

Please do not blow or sweep leaves into the street! Loose leaves in the street can conceal mufflers, hubcaps or other objects, entice children into the street to play, and clog storm drains. They can pose a danger to your family or neighbors and can even cause flooding that could damage your property. Recycling leaves with your yard waste is easy and convenient and makes a safer and tidier community for all of us.

If you have extra yard waste, you may place it in 32-gallon garbage cans with handles and a lid. Sticks and branches may be bundled (not to exceed 2' x 3') and placed alongside the container. You also may request additional toters from Recology Vacaville Solano at (707) 448-2945. Recology Vacaville Solano will deliver the additional toter to your address, the cost is only $4 per month, and it can be returned at any time.

Fruit and vegetable scraps from your kitchen or garden are welcome in your green waste toter. Apple and pear cores, seeds and pits, banana peels, potato and carrot peelings, broccoli stalks, fruit and vegetable leftovers and similar materials all can be deposited in your yard waste toter. If you maintain a garden, damaged or rotting fruits and vegetables also can be discarded with your yard waste.

The green toter should be placed within two feet of the curb for pickup. If using a 32-gallon can, please place next to the green toter at the curb. 32-gallon cans cannot exceed 50 lbs. in weight when full.

The following step-by-step photos show how Recology Hay Road turns thousands of pounds of our fruit and vegetable scraps, lawn clippings, tree trimmings and other green waste into rich, useful compost.

First the Vacaville trucks or self-haul customers are weighed at the landfill gate and directed to the yard waste tipping area. After the material is tipped, it is ground into smaller pieces to enable the composting process to occur more rapidly.

Next, the ground material is bagged for processing.

The material decomposes in the bag for 60 days.

Then the bag is opened and the contents are turned about once a week for 30 days as they cure.

After the 30 day curing period, the material is screened to remove any contamination or oversized material. You should be able to see the "good compost" to the right of the machine.

Once the compost is sorted, it's ready to be distributed to the public.

Vacaville residents can pick up compost at the landfill for free! Each resident is allowed one truckload per day (approximately three cubic yards). Residents must load their own compost, so don't forget your shovel and tarp! It's a good idea to call the landfill (707-451-3276) before you drive to it to ensure compost is ready and available.

Compost can be picked up from April until the end of October, weather permitting and subject to availability. Proof of Vacaville residency is required.
